SIR — After nine years of uncertainty, we now have the definitive answer – Hinkley Point C will go ahead.

This project has been on the cards since the early 1980s and I guess it was always to be.

We are a wasteful generation, we need to feed our lust for energy without very much consideration for conserving it.

Hinkley Point C will indeed bring much needed employment opportunities for West Somerset’s younger generation and, looking around my own ward of Quantock Vale, I wonder what else there would be if it were not for the opportunities generated from the Hinkley project.

Locally, I and many others have lost lifelong friends - friends who have sold their homes and moved away from the leviathan moving steadily toward them, a little enclave changed forever - Shurton.

But at least now those friends and neighbours can be confident that their decision to move was justified – quite a price to pay for peace and tranquility.

Living as I do a mere 800 yards from the construction site, it worries me that over the past month EDF contractors have been working weekends to complete the southern boundary works as fast as they can.

It worries me because extremely heavy duty massive machinery starts working at 7.30am on Sunday mornings. Imagine that; your opportunity for a lay-in on a Sunday morning–- still dark, and all hell breaks loose!

I vaguely remember the construction of Hinkley B. I remember those who built it – rough, hard drinking men, usually ready for a punch-up any night of the week.

I am thankful that today’s working practices are much improved and that kind of behaviour will not be tolerated.

Over the next decade West Somerset will see many changes, many opportunities, all potentially positive if we look at them like that.

Nine years ago, Stogursey Parish Council was delighted at the offer of £25,000 as community benefit – we settled for £500,000!

These are the way things move forward.

What more can we achieve by being positive about the transformation working with Taunton Deane and the opportunities resulting from the Hinkley C project!

I just wish that I was 30 years younger!

Member for Quantock Vale Ward,

West Somerset Council.
