SIR — Last week I attended Watchet's annual town meeting and was dismayed to hear Cllr Tony Knight, chairman of the district council, when referring to the new Watchet railway bridge, say that it was "old" Watchet that had paid for the bridge.

I took great exception to this, as did several members of the audience. The money for the bridge came from Section 106 planning gain monies.

The monies I think he was referring to were for the extras which the district council did not think it should pay for - these were Victoriana lamps and rails down the staircase.

I understand that a large sum was given to Cllr Knight by a local resident in remembrance of his late wife and that others had given donations (not all were "old" Watchet).

What made it worse was that when pulled up by a member of the public about his remark, he compounded it again by saying "I stand by what I said, it was old Watchet that stumped up most of the money".

There should be no distinction in this town as to "old" or "new" Watchetonians. We all do our bit for the town, belonging to committees, projects etc, giving money to the local organisations and our time, as Cllr Knight well knows.

High Bank,
