SIR — Minehead Town Council’s decision to take on responsibility for the town’s public toilets is to be applauded.

It was Minehead Conservation Society that spearheaded the campaign to save the public toilets and which presented a petition of over 1,200 names to WSC.

This was by no means a final total as additional forms filled with names continued to arrive after the council meeting.

Our committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all its members and those organisations and shops that supported the cause by collecting names, holding the petition forms or signing them.

It is all of you who are the true victors.

During the campaign a number of elderly people and stroke victims said to us they would not be able to go into town any more if there were no public toilets.

How truly dreadful it would have been if members of our society had been forced into isolation because of the lack of a loo!

Tourism too, would have been decimated.

But having heard our cry, the town council has proved to be the ‘silver lining’ of that particular storm cloud. Let us rejoice!

Mrs Sally Bainbridge,

Chairman,

Minehead Conservation Society.
