SIR — Minehead is a mostly lovely place to live. There is always room to improve what is on offer, especially compared particularly to other towns in Europe, and if you make yourself very vulnerable – such as when riding a bike with your own young daughter. She might not be quite ready to go off on her own just yet, but some of our road surfaces and junctions are appallingly engineered. We will try not to feel so bullied that we give up riding; it is just that we have to be very careful for our safety.

What we currently seem to have is a very car-centric town centre which I live in the hope of seeing to be made into something much more welcoming to all. However, living near to a junior school and the way the parents drive and park with such little regard for others, I often feel very sad for the example being set for the next generation. A lot, of course, depends on public investment in physical schemes to encourage more people walking and cycling more, but so much depends on behaviours too.

So if you can make yourself walk or cycle for a change away from the car, then you too might realise the benefit to everyone for that changed behaviour. You will certainly notice more about the town. But you will also come to realise that Minehead needs to change and improve.
