There is a long waiting list for allotments in Watchet but six have now been created – and allocated – on an area of unused land owned by Magna Housing.
The land had been empty for some time. Annie Cole, housing officer at Magna, said: “We wanted to do something with the land that would benefit our residents and support the local community we are based in.”
Watchet Town Council environment planning committee member Dave Westcott said: “I had been tasked with looking for additional land to provide allotments.
“When Magna approached us about the land, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. It’s been great to work with Magna to provide this additional space.”
A lot of work was involved over the last ten months, for both Magna and the council, preparing the ground, creating the allotments and organising the allocations.
