THE West Somerset Brass Band – based in Watchet but with members all across the district – made music to mark the VE Day anniversary

And every Thursday evening the players have been standing on their doorsteps at 8pm and playing the same piece of music at the same time to thank the NHS and key workers.

Renditions of Over The Rainbow, What a Wonderful World, Land of Hope and Glory on St George’s Day, and You’ll Never Walk Alone to celebrate Colonel Tom Moore’s 100th birthday.

Last Thursday, the pieces played were White Cliffs of Dover and We’ll Meet Again to commemorate VE Day.

Among the West Somerset Bras Band members are the Whitworths, a family of four from Taunton.

“We also have five players who live in the same street in Watchet and join together every week. They have been affectionately nicknamed The Causeway Rainbows,” said the band’s musical director Niall Watson.

He added that, in normal times, the band The band would have been extremely busy honouring the 75th anniversary of VE Day: “But it’s great to know that members of the band are still using their talent to show their appreciation during these challenging times.”
