SIR — The West Somerset branch of the Burma Star Association, its ladies and members would like to say thank you to you and all your very helpful staff for the wonderful presentation in last Friday's Free Press. The combination of your feature and the kindness of W H Smith in giving us window space for our exhibit of items relating to the Far East Campaign helped ensure the success of our VJ Day memorial service in Blenheim Gardens on Monday. We say thank you to everyone who loaned items for the exhibit. My sincere thanks to our Branch Chaplain for conducting a lovely service, Mr Glyn Court for writing the order of service, Donald Weston and Frank Davis for the reading of the list of honour, and Bill Salter, David McArthur, and Mr Court for the readings. The branch would also like to thank the following for attending the service: The Royal British Legion Standard Bearers, men and ladies, the RAFA, St John Ambulance, the Mayor and representatives of Minehead Town Council, the Red Cross, Minehead Police, who kept a protective eye on us during the service, all our local residents and holiday visitors, and Tom Griffith - for his kindness to our members. Some 60 years ago, many thousands of men and women who served in the Far East Campaign did not return home with us. As a result of their sacrifice, we who attended the service of remembrance in Blenheim Gardens have been able to live our life in our lovely country for 60 years. The words of the Kohima Epitaph — When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today — together with the words of the exultation will always be a constant reminder of how fortunate we have been to come home. For as long as we are able, we will continue to remember VJ Day, August 15, 1945, and the national day of remembrance, November 11, in support of the Royal British Legion. Once again, our sincere thanks to everyone who took part on that very special day, Monday, August 15, the final end of the Second World War. Rob Johnson, Chairman, West Somerset Branch and South West Area, Burma Star Association.
