Our intention was to put together a week of events, organised by a volunteers and local traders, beginning with the tenth anniversary of the opening of the marina and culminating in the already existing and separately planned annual kids's festival, carnival and carnival beer festival.
The first weekend saw boat owners from the marina and from further afield providing a fun weekend based round the marina, The Esplanade and the boat museum.
There were powerboat rides organised by local owners and sea scouts, a visit by a Sea King helicopter, and storytelling and sea shanties at the boat museum, including an impressive firework display alongside musical events on the Saturday evening.
During the week, many local schools, churches, societies and clubs put on events for residents and visitors, including a seaside evening organised by the Conservation Society at the tidal pool and Watchet Town Council's Fun Day on Thursday.
Local enthusiasts helped out by providing displays of model helicopters and hovercraft as well as Lego building,
Overall, reaction to the event was very positive.
Our aim was to add to the existing and successful events already in situ and promote Watchet for residents and visitors alike as a great place to be over this holiday period.
It is hoped that Watchet Summertime could become an annual event, but to achieve this the organisers feel that more people need to become involved.
To this end, an open meeting has been organised for Wednesday (September 7) at 7.30pm in the Watchet Royal British Legion club. Please come along tell us what you thought of the week and help decide whether there is enough support for taking this on in 2012 and beyond.
John Irven and Molly Quint,
Watchet Summertime Committee.
