WEST Somerset Sports made hard work of beating Taverners in the second round of the Seward Cup on Saturday.
They were clearly suffering the effects of their two-month lay-off and it was no surprise when they fell behind after some hesitancy in their defence.
Although they then enjoyed a better spell which saw Paul Woodley equalise with a chip from 35 yards out, more defensive lapses saw the visitors go in at half-time deserved 3-1 leaders.
Sports showed more determination in the second half but still struggled to create chances and Taverners could well have extended their lead.

They cut the deficit to 3-2 when S Jordan's corner was only punched to N Watson and he scored from close range.
Taverners then defended well and Sports had to wait until injury time for the equaliser, Adam Elston's shot finding its way through a crowded area into the net.
That took the game into extra time, and although Taverners created the better chances, Sports got the crucial decider in the first period, an accurate Jordan cross being headed home by Watson.
Taffy Long was man of the match.
Stogursey progressed to the fourth round of the same competition with a 2-1 home win over Victoria Rangers, James Scrimengour and Matt Hayes their scorers.
In Division Two, Bishops Lydeard Reserves stay top despite being sunk 4-1 at home by Porlock. Steve Howard got their goal.
Dulverton Town remain rooted to the foot of the table after losing 2-1 at home to Nether Stowey, Steve Hadley getting their goal.
Division Three saw Watchet Reserves hammered 6-0 away to Knight Rangers, while in Division Four, Exmoor Rangers drew 1-1 away to Bridgwater Sports Reserves.
A top of the table clash in Division Five saw Williton held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bridgwater Foresters, Robbie Allen and Keith Jones netting for Williton.
Three goals from Adam Knowles helped Dinamo Watchet to a 5-0 win away to Brandon, and Porlock Reserves beat Victoria Park Reserves 2-0 at home with goals from Neil Binding and Dave Farmer.
They attacked from the start but it wasn't until the 40th minute that Binding broke the deadlock when his 20-yard shot was deflected into the net.
Porlock carried on attacking in the second half, and although Victoria Park came more into the game, the defence held firm and Farmer made the points safe by converting a pass from D Healy, who had made a great run.
Porlock Reserves: R Lobb, K Ackland, M Healy, M Sully, D Healy, M Gunn, N Binding, C Carr, T Ollerenshaw, S Watley, D Farmer, subs I Groves, P Swallow (both used).
