SIR — Several years ago we made a visit to Dunster and were so impressed with the castle and charming village that we decided they were a 'must' again on our present tour of England, and we haven't been disappointed.

However, we understand that there is now serious concern that the National Trust plans to open a restaurant in the castle grounds, which will undoubtedly affect all who have a business in Dunster.

We have appreciated the refreshment facilities in other more isolated National Trust properties, but when there are amenities in such close proximity, it seems very unfair to disadvantage others.

We are surprised that this move has been made during such a deep recession when so many are struggling to make ends meet and the 'Death of the High Street trading' features so prominently in the news.

We wish all at the castle well and hope they have a good season, but strongly disapprove of the proposal and hope the planning authorities will not grant permission for the venture to go ahead.

Jean and Douglas Dowson,

New Zealand.
