SIR — The letter from Mr Muers Raby, chairman of the Quantock Staghounds (Free Press October 6) refers to a 'minor incursion' by the hunt on National Trust land.
In fact, the National Trust is concerned that the incident was a substantial trespass by the hunt. As many TV viewers will have witnessed, the video clearly shows a stag being hunted on well-known National Trust land.
Far from the matter being regarded as closed on the evening of the incident, as alleged by Mr Muers Raby, the National Trust launched a full investigation and consulted its lawyers. The matter was concluded by the Quantock Staghounds' undertaking that it will not trespass in future.
The National Trust fulfilled its longstanding commitment to consider the implications of the Burns Report on Thursday, October 5.
The council of the National Trust decided that the report did not alter the basis on which the decision was taken to stop the hunting of red deer on its property.
