A GROUP of young people at West Somerset College have taken up a dedicated exercise programme – all in a good cause.
Fifteen boys and girls in year ten are aiming to raise £1,000 for CLIC Sargent, the cancer charity for children, young people and their families, through daily sponsored exercise for 30 days.
They were inspired to take up the challenge after one of their friends became ill and was supported by the charity, which also gave a talk at their school.
“They are superstars,” said teacher Cat Hargreaves, head of year at the school.
“They came up with the idea, got sponsorship over their summer holidays, are doing it in their own time and all off their own bat.”
The youngsters are doing 30 minutes of exercise a day for their Stepping Up to Beat Cancer challenge, which started on Monday September 10, and Cat is monitoring them.
Their exercise videos are uploaded by the school to a special Twitter page, and the group is also raising money through bag packing at Morrison’s next week (September 28 and 29), and a special step challenge and non-uniform day involving other students.
“They’re amazing – we’re very proud of them,” said Cat.
