A STRIKING 20ft by 12ft street-art mural completed by Watchet youngsters is turning heads on the town’s recreation ground since it was completed last week.

The mural, the first art scheme organised by the Watchet Strives youth group, is a finishing touch to the newly refurbished multi-use games area (MUGA) and includes a dedication to the late Cllr Sally de Renzy-Martin who gave much of her time as a councillor to improving youth provision for Watchet.

The idea of the project was to teach different styles of art to young people and use their creativity to design the mural during two-hour sessions over four to six weeks. They were well attended by youngsters from 12-15 and led by street artist Charlie Mcfarley and youth worker Andy Westcott from Minehead EYE, who taught various styles and techniques.

A spokesman for the project said: “The mural was designed by the young people with their ideas based on Watchet and the community. Included on the design was a Watchet town footballer and boats, rope and an anchor for the maritime link, fossils to represent local beaches and balls to represent the location of the mural.”
