SAVE the Children supporters in Minehead put on their walking shoes to boost the coffers of a charity celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

The 'Women Walk for Children' event was an idea dreamt up by the Street branch of the organisation.

But West Somerset supporters took it on and raised a total of £302 by strolling from the Parks Walk in Minehead to Bratton and back again on Wednesday.

A total of 30 women took part in the fundraiser and so successful was it that there have been calls for it to be repeated next year.

"We decided to stage the event because we liked the title," said Minehead branch spokeswoman Stevie Jenkins.

"Everyone enjoyed it and we were pleased with the amount we raised."

Save the Children, set up to help starving youngsters in Germany and Austria at the end of World War One, now largely works in Third World countries.

The money raised by the West Somerset supporters is expected to go towards the organisation's programmes in Africa.
