FAMILIES planning to celebrate VE-Day tomorrow with a trip away from home are being urged to resist the temptation.

West Somerset’s MP Ian Liddell-Grainger said lockdown rules effectively put beaches and beauty spots out of bounds.

And he added: “I ask people just to make one more sacrifice to help the NHS and the Government really contain this awful problem.

“It would be madness now to ignore the rules about off-limit areas and social distancing and simply head for a day out as millions of people ordinarily would – because that very action could unravel so much of the progress we have made in minimising the toll that coronavirus has exacted on our nation.

“We are moving towards a relaxation of the rules and there is every likelihood that by the time the August Bank Holiday rolls round we shall be much more free to enjoy it in the traditional way. I believe it was an inspired move to switch the Spring Bank Holiday to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE-Day.

“But let’s observe it safely. It would be tragically ironic if our celebrations of an event which cost so many million human lives then turned out to be the cause of further loss of life from this dreadful virus.”
