YOUNGSTER Stan Reid has made a successful debut with the West Somerset Brass Band at the age of just 10.

Stan performed with the band on Easter Sunday in St Mary the Virgin Church, Nettlecombe, playing the euphonium.

His musical journey began two years ago when he decided to learn the euphonium as part of his home education.

Stan’s father, Eb bass player Matt Reid, at first took him to a learner group with Wiveliscombe Town Band when he was eight years old, but the group disbanded shortly afterwards.

He was then welcomed into West Somerset Brass Band’s training band last September, learning under the supportive guidance of conductor Claire Whitworth and her dedicated team of helpers.

Ms Whitworth said: “He has gained so much in confidence, progressing significantly in a short space of time and has recently started playing with the main band.

“His first performance in public at Nettlecombe is a testament to his dedication and talent.”

The West Somerset Brass Band has a vibrant learner and training band and welcomes both children and adults who are keen to embark on their musical journey.

It provides instruments and a comprehensive training programme led by experienced instructors, and no prior musical knowledge is required, just a passion for learning.

Ms Whitworth said: “Congratulations to Stan on his debut, and we look forward to seeing more of his musical talent in the future.”
