AN urgent appeal has been launched by West Somerset shanty band Hugill’s Crew for sound equipment to help them continue fund-raising for good causes.

The band has recently presented £1,500 to the Children’s Hospice South West, and has now adopted Watchet-based charity Elliot’s Touch to support.

But the singers need more professional sound equipment because their existing kit was only really suitable for small, indoor venues.

Hugill’s Crew founder Keith Woolgar said: “Just because we have fulfilled our pledge to the hospice, we will not stop singing, do not stop, will not stop raising money for good causes.

“We are now launching an urgent appeal for anybody who has professional quality sound equipment that we could use at the first of three live performances before Christmas.

“We have enough static microphones and stands, as well as a decent mixer desk that we admit we do not really know how to use.

“What we are looking for is the type of equipment that can light up a bandstand with the sound of sea shanty singing at its best.”

Mr Woolgar said anybody who has the kind of equipment needed to launch the new partnership with Elliot’s Touch should contact him by calling 07516 300470 or emailing [email protected].

Hugill’s Crew comprises four men older than 75 years and one younger member, Chris Webb, who have dedicated hours of rehearsal and performance time to raise funds for charitable causes.

Elliot’s Touch raises money to help fund research and raise awareness for cardiomyopathy and mitochondria dise in children.

Three venues have already been booked for performances by Hugill’s Crew:

• The Bandstand, in Blenheim Gardens, Minehead, on August 26, from 2 pm to 4 pm

• The Driftwood Café, in Blue Anchor, on September 16, from 12 noon to 2 pm

• Watchet Bowls Club, on November 25, times to be confirmed
