An accident black-spot is to have its speed limit cut from 60mph to 40mph.

The A359 from Yeovil to Mudford road has been the scene of many accidents, some fatal, in recent years.

Excessive speed is believed to have been one reason for the high number of accidents, and the county council has decided enough is enough.

In a letter to local MP David Laws, highway service manager Geoff Dight confirms action is about to be taken.

"There is a significant accident problem on this section of road and our consultants have undertaken a comprehensive investigation. As a result, a number of proposals have been put forward and in principal it has been agreed to introduce a 40mph speed limit between Yeovil and Mudford, provide anti-skid surface on part of the road and erect various improved warning signs with road markings.

"Consultations are now being carried out with the parish council and I am hopeful the measures described will be implemented this year," he writes.

MP Laws, who has been campaigning for a speed limit reduction with county

councillor Sam Crabb and Mudford Parish Council, said: "I am pleased the

county council is taking this action. It is high time something was done to

address the A359, which has become an accident blackspot.

"Slowing traffic down before cars enter Mudford should also provide a little

extra relief for people in the village who have to contend with a large

amount of speeding traffic through the village."
