Covid restrictions may still be in place but Sid Sherring of Williton celebrated his 100th birthday in style last Sunday (June 27), with 30 of his nearest and dearest - plus an extra-special cake.

The rain held off and gazebos were in place as the family celebrated with Sid, who still lives in his own home, together with a member of his family.

He also still drives himself around, including to Taunton racecourse where he has been a regular for many years. So much so that the racecourse gave him two passes for the next season as a special birthday gift, and his two-tier celebration cake was on a horse racing theme!

He was also delighted to receive a birthday letter from the Queen.

“He didn’t know he was going to get it until the day before, as the family have to apply nowadays, so he was very pleased to receive it,” said Sid’s grandson Matthew Heywood.

“The party went very well and he was very happy.”

Five of Sid’s eight children were present at the celebration and he also has 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
