SEVEN local groups have been given grants by Dulverton Town Council at the authority’s third annual community budgeting event.

Local organisations involved in social, health and educational services across the whole spectrum of age groups in the town were invited to bid for grants.

And despite a shortage of donors to the funding pot, a respectable total was raised with help from Magna Housing, Avon and Somerset Police and a contribution from the town council itself.

The seven groups presented their case in turn and fielded questions to help fully explain their work and how the money would be used.

“It also helped to raise the general awareness of just how much really worthwhile, local self-help is going on in Dulverton,” said Dulverton Mayor Cllr Nick Thwaites.

After tea and cakes – baked and donated by councillors – the attendees gave their considered opinion of the bids by rating them on value for money, practicality and benefit to the community.

“The result of the voting was very close, as was expected, as each organisation is doing a very worthwhile job and their work is much appreciated,” said Cllr Thwaites.

The following grants were agreed: Dulverton Congregational Church - £2,000 for its refurbishment fund; Dulverton Action Group - £150 for cleaning up the town; Dulverton and District Young People’s Project - £3,154 towards a youth club; Exmoor U3A/Vintage Film Club - £500 to provide mental stimulation to the over 55s; Family and Toddler Group - £500 for regular meetings for under fours; Dulverton Dance - £1,000 for healthy exercise for older people; and Dulverton Development Forum - £1,000 for live arts events.
