MEMBERS of the 1st Watchet Sea Scouts were kept busy on the water both inside and out the harbour at the weekend when they found themselves involved in a real-life rescue. Group leaders had been involved in a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) safety boat training course with visiting scout leaders from Newport in Gwent and Poole in Dorset. RYA instructors from Watchet had been taking part in rescue demonstrations to teach the course participants how to help a series of craft, including sailing dinghies, kayaks, canoes, windsurfers and other power boats. Having undertaken numerous practice drills on sailing dinghies, the group suddenly found themselves faced with a real rescue - a 30ft yacht was suffering engine problems and needed to be towed back into the safety of the marina. The visiting scout leaders and the instructors were able to put into practise what they had been learning and towed the yacht back into the marina. The 1st Watchet Sea Scout group is registered as a RYA training centre and offers a variety of courses including dinghy sailing, power boating, first aid and VHF Radio, not only to its own members but also those from other scout and guide groups from around the country.
