A WEST Somerset headteacher has won a top national award for taking sport to the top of the timetable. Ian Bradbury, of Danesfield Middle and Community Middle School in Williton, received the Daily Telegraph and Norwich Union award for School Sports Teacher of the Year at a star-studded presentation at the House of Commons. The ceremony represented the culmination of a campaign by the two companies to promote awareness of and participation in school sport. For the past six years, Ian has given up evenings and weekends to turn a school with a crippling budget deficit and almost no competitive fixtures into a "hotbed for sport" - most notably cross- country and athletics. Ian said he was delighted to receive the award and grateful to both the Daily Telegraph and Norwich Union for recognising the importance of participation and excellence in school sport in the UK. Daily Telegraph sports editor Keith Perry said: "It is vital we try to encourage children to enjoy more sport and reward them for their successes. "These awards have been created to demonstrate the value of school sport, showcase best practice and to raise awareness of the achievements of Britain's future champions." Norwich Union already has a partnership with UK Athletics, resulting in more than a million children a year becoming involved in the sport. The company's director of marketing Simon Quick said: "Our support of the Daily Telegraph's worthy campaign helps us showcase our commitment to grass roots sport across the board and our desire to champion the successes of future sports stars."
