Over nine years I have followed the wonderful success of the Harbour Community Bookshop in Watchet, being very grateful to the volunteers running the shop and also, of course, the local authorities for their kind support.

Your paper on October 13 said that nearly £170,000 had been donated so far to good causes, with £98,000 given to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

I realise that the bookshop has had notice to quit by the end of February 2018 and I consider it a dreadful loss to so many if the facility cannot continue.

Many local organisations have gained much benefit, and certainly the tourists, an important part of the local economy.

I feel that having received so much local benefit, the whole community, including the local authorities, can best say thank you by ensuring that the shop continues, even if under different terms.

For eight years in the past, I was chairman of the Cystic Fibrosis Avon and Somerset Branch and have been closely involved with the CF Trust for over 40 years – hence my keenness to ensure that future medical research can be financially supported.

Tremendous medical progress has been made in recent years but continued cash support is needed.

Mike Priscott, Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
