SAMARITANS’ Taunton and Somerset branch – which has been celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – will be open as usual across Christmas and the New Year.
As happens every year, the volunteers will be on duty in the branch at 16 Wood Street, Taunton, through the days and nights as they do throughout the rest of the year.
The branch is open for visitors between 9am and 9pm and people may phone, text or email at any time of day or night. The free 24-hour helpline number is 116 123; email [email protected]
Christmas is a particularly tough time for those who do not have family to support them, but they can talk through their feelings of loneliness or problems with Samaritans. The charity is not there just for those who feel suicidal – it is for anyone in any level of distress.
“Saying out loud how you’re feeling can make the difference between coping and not coping. So we’re here to listen,” said branch director Ted.
“We help not by telling people what to do or trying to solve their problems, but just by being there.”
An information evening for potential volunteers is held on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm in the branch.
