What is known as PUFFIN crossings are gradually being introduced in Yeovil.

PUFFIN stands for Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent crossing and aims to not only improve safety but reduce delays at pedestrian crossings as well.

Since March last year, three Puffins have been installed in the town - at Mudford Road, Ilchester Road/Stiby Road and Old Station Road.

A county council document describes these new crossings as detector-fitted and able to tell if people are waiting to cross the road, allowing enough time for even the slowest of pedestrians to cross safely before cars get the green light.

The document also stated: "The days of motorists sitting behind a red light when no-one is crossing will also go. If the detectors don't see anybody waiting, they will keep the lights on green, reducing any unnecessary delays."

PUFFIN crossings are equipped with a pedestrian signal which will make life easier for the visually impaired.

Current pelican crossings won't be replaced by PUFFINs until the end of their lifespan, but all new crossings will be equipped with the new type of device from day one.

County council portfolio holder for environment and transport Tim Carroll

said: "I welcome any initiative which makes our roads safer. It makes much more sense for the crossing lights to respond to the actual situation rather

than put pressure on the elderly or those with young children, who may take longer to get over the road.

"Motorists will also welcome not having to wait at red lights by empty crossings."
