A NEW £16 million West Lakes Chalet Village has been unveiled at at Butlin's resort in Minehead with a floral installation featuring a specially-commissioned Sir William Butlin rose.

The bespoke roses were grown on site into an exact replica of the original Butlin's ten by ten-foot chalet, which was first unveiled to the public by Sir Billy in 1936.

The Sir William Butlin rose was commissioned to mark the launch of the new chalets, which have been built around a series of landscaped gardens, fountains and lakes at the resort.

Each chalet has an open-plan living space, family dining area, kitchen, housekeeping, dedicated check-in and parking and free wifi.

They are also equipped with arts and crafts materials for younger children, card games and dedicated outdoor space – on the advice of internet parenting site Mumsnet which helped the firm design the family-friendly chalets.

Guests will be able to choose from two and three-bedroom parkview chalets and two, three and four-bedroom lakeside and lakeview chalets.

Dermot King, Butlin's managing director, said: "Nearly 80 years on from when Billy Butlin opened his first resort, we're continuing to innovate our offering, alongside partners like Mumsnet, to ensure that we're providing the very best accommodation and facilities for short breaks in the UK, while also creating the perfect place to create family memories for many years to come.

"The magnificent rose installation recognises all that Billy created, with West Lakes Chalet Village being a continuation of his legacy but also to represent how far Butlin's has come."

Some 1,936 individual blooms were used to re-create the 1936 floral chalet.

The Sir William Butlin rose will be planted across all three of the Butlin's resorts nationwide, with some of the flowers sold to guests to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, Sir Billy's favourite charity and Butlin's official charity partner for 2015.

Minehead Mayor Les Smith was among the guests invited to the launch and is pictured (right) outside the chalets with Butlin's managing director Mr King and redcoats Sam and Matt.
