LONG-standing Somerset Council member Christine Lawrence, who has stepped down on health grounds, was described as a ‘trailblazer’ when tributes were paid to her at a full council meeting in Bridgwater on Thursday (September 25).
Mrs Lawrence, who lives in Minehead, served on the authority for more than 20 years and represented the Dunster division.
Council chairman Cllr Mike Best said: “Your long and distinguished career in public service stands as a testament to your unwavering commitment to the people and communities of West Somerset, over more than three decades.
“You have served with integrity, compassion and a deep understanding of the needs of your constituents.
“We commend and thank you for your exceptional public service and the positive difference you have made to so many lives.”
Conservative group leader Cllr Diogo Rodrigues said: “We would like to thank Christine for her outstanding contribution not just to this council and to Somerset, but to the local Conservative party, too, and the positive example she has set over so many years.
“We wish her well in her retirement from politics.”
Former council deputy leader Cllr Mandy Chilcott said: “Christine has met, lived, and exceeded standards for public office every day since you were first elected.
“You have been a trailblazer for women in politics, the only woman leader of West Somerset Council, and the only woman chair of Somerset County Council.
“You have a caring heart and a sharp mind, with a resilience and inner strength unlike any other that I have known.”
Cllr Frances Nicholson said: “If ever I disagreed with Christine, I needed to think very hard, because she was almost always right.”
Ms Lawrence said in response: “It has been a real privilege to work with you all over many years and I shall remember you all.”
