SIR — Last week the Free Press covered the story of circa eight months to switch out the street lights in Parks Lane. I as a taxpayer involved Terry Venner, the county councillor, who tried to get the problem fixed, all to no avail.

But the Free Press contacted Somerset County Council and within two working days the problem was sorted. Today the lights are not on during the day - so support your paper as they support you!

On the same issue, I was gobsmacked by the naivety of the representative of the county council's comment "It's not a waste of money. We pay a flat rate". That astounded me. You can be sure that whoever provides the county council with electricity monitors demand and the following year the cost is passed on to us the taxpayer.

Let's be clear: inefficiencies in the council are paid by us - the taxpayers
