A RARE opportunity will be available tomorrow to explore the remains of an Augustinian priory on Exmoor.

The ruins and earthworks of Barlynch Priory, near Dulverton, will be opened to the public on Wednesday (July 20) from 2 pm to 4.30 pm.

Visitors will be able to explore the remains and discover the history of the 12th century priory, set in a wooded valley beside the River Exe.

The priory was founded around 1174-89 and dissolved in 1536 and the remains of one building are still clearly visible, surrounded by a network of earthworks and historic buildings that help to reveal its story.

Visitors will have a choice of self-guided and guided walks with leaflets and interpretation panels available.

Donations will be accepted for CareMoor, Exmoor National Park Authority’s scheme to help fund work to conserve landscapes, habitats, footpaths, and heritage.
