A heated council debate ended with a compromise that saw Yeovil Concert Wind Band (YCWB) being given a £500 grant.

The band had applied for a grant of £750 to purchase music so that its repertoire could be extended.

Each applicant must state in what way its activities benefit the town of Yeovil. YCWB stated that it provides an opportunity for shift workers etc. to continue their interest in music by providing sessions at times that take their commitments into consideration.

Councillor Roger Baker instantly declared his support for the application but failed to convince fellow council member Tony Lock.

Councillor Lock said the band was predominantly for a group of people getting together "just for a blow", adding the band did not appear to take serious engagements where they could raise funds.

Councillor Pat Martin pointed out that the band had played at some concerts.

Addressing Councillor Lock, Councillor Baker commented: "You im-plied they were only there for a blow," adding he found the remark derogatory and that he saw nothing wrong with the way the band went about things.

Councillor John Cruddas tried to calm things down by suggesting a compromise of £500.

It was then pointed out that some band members lived outside the area served by the town council - but Councillor Martin replied that had never been a problem when allocating funds to the town band.

Councillor Tony Fife was against a grant being given because YCWB was not a training band.

Councillor Lock explained that his comment was not meant to come across as derogatory, but remained of the opinion that the request should be turned down - one reason being that scores of music could be bought for as little as £10.

The council voted 8-3 to donate £500.
