CUTCOMBE'S hopes of providing a surfaced games area on the Recreation Ground took a big stride forward this week.

The Sport England Lottery Fund approved a bid for funding and is to make a £30,592 contribution to the £42,000 project.

The new facility will be floodlit, fenced and marked out for tennis, netball, basketball, roller hockey and five-a-side football.

Bookings are thought likely to be made through the village shop and pupils at Cutcombe School will have free use of the games area during the week.

Project leader and committee chairman Eric Clarbull said: "We are delighted to receive this money from Sport England. It signifies a major step forward for a small community on Exmoor."

The games area project is part of West Somerset District Council's sports development plan which instigated the idea two years ago.

It has drawn strong support not only from villagers and the school but also the youth service, West Somerset Community College and the Young Farmers Club.

The grant is the 17th to be made in West Somerset by Sport England, bringing the total distributed to more than £1 million.
