STORM Amy brought chaos to West Somerset over the weekend as trees were brought down and blocked roads and cut power supplies.

Hundreds of properties across a wide area of Exmoor were without electricity all day Saturday.

The final Watchet street fair of the season on the Esplanade on Sunday was cancelled because of the stormy weather, which prompted a yellow Met Office warning of potential risk to life, particularly in coastal areas, and tons of sand was swept off Minehead beach onto sea front roads.

Trees started falling on Friday night (October 3) with one blocking the the Dulverton to Tiverton road A396/B3227 junction and another across the A396 near Bridgetown.

The B3190 between Tropiquaria roundabout and Raleghs Cross on the Brendon Hills was blocked by a fallen tree on Saturday evening.

More than 1,000 homes and businesses in an area stretching from Exford to Porlock Weir lost electricity when a tree fell on high voltage overhead lines near Porlock just after 9 am on Saturday.

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson said nearly 900 were reconnected in about two-and-half hours but the last did not have power restored until 11.30 pm.

Another 800-plus were affected in the Exebridge area when a tree fell on an overhead line at about 1 pm on Saturday and the final reconnection took until just before 10 pm.

The spokesperson said fuse replacement work also had to be carried out in the area.

Several properties were also off-grid all night on Saturday into Sunday after a blown fuse in another incident near Bridgetown.

Residents lost power just after 12 noon on Saturday and engineers worked through the night before connecting them at shortly after 11.30 am on Sunday.

The spokesperson said: “We would like to thank people affected for their patience while repairs were carried out.”
