A TOTAL of 35 volunteers took part in a beach clean-up at Porlock Weir arranged by West Somerset Surfers Against Sewage on Saturday (April 1).
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) local organiser Adam Reed said it was a really successful day.
“Although the beach seemed cleaner than last year, it was more down to recent weather conditions than cleaner seas,” he said.
“Marine litter is an increasing problem with eight million items entering our oceans every day.

See festive season planning applications and decisions in West Somerset and Exmoor“We cleared about eight full bags of general rubbish from the beach, lots of fishing line and hooks and random items such as shoes and an oil filter.
“We also removed 79 plastic bottles and 23 metal drinks cans – which we believe is further evidence of the need for a deposit return system on single-use drinks containers.”
