HUNDREDS of villagers and visitors lined the streets of Porlock on Saturday as the village celebrated its 33rd carnival.

The only remaining carnival on Exmoor saw local groups and charities dress up in all manner of costumes to parade through the streets, accompanied by majorettes and a marching band.

And their efforts were well rewarded with collections on the day and donations reaching record amounts, raising money for local charities and worthy causes.

After the procession, entrants and spectators headed for the village hall for the prizegiving - overseen by Carnival Queen Aimee Tucker and Carnival Princesses Caitlin Tisbury and Paige Lothian - as well as a disco and refreshments.

The overall winning entry came from Porlock Ladies who chose Porlock Oysters as the inspiration for their entry.

Nigel Southwood, carnival chairman, said: “It was a fantastic day and a great carnival.

“The crowds really got into the carnival spirit, cheering on the wonderful variety of floats, and everyone had a lovely evening.

“The committee wants to thank all those who took part in the carnival, volunteers and all those who came to watch and gave so generously.”
