THE little yellow competitors in the annual Porlock Duck Race tomorrow (May 27) will have to negotiate a whole host of new obstacles.

A record crowd is expected to attend the traditional family day, featuring 60 yellow plastic ducks competing in ten races plus a grand final.

Ten new obstacles have been created by the organisers, Porlock Carnival Committee, to make the river more of a spectacle for race-goers.They include a replica of Porlock Weir, a rabbit warren, a U-Boat, Dunster Castle and even a very scary Beast of Exmoor looming over the river – there will be a special prize in the free ‘name the beast’ competition.

The event kicks off at 2pm at Sparkhayes Campsite. It costs £2 per duck for all races, with prizes and rosettes for first, second and third place.

There will also be a bouncy castle, donkey rides, raffle, barbecue, licensed bar, tea and cakes, and ice cream as well as a ‘best hat at the races’ competition for adults and children. Entry to the duck race is free.
