CARNIVAL enthusiasts in Porlock are offering to share their passion for processions with neighbouring towns and villages. Porlock's annual event is almost 30 years old but, after time was called on Dulverton Carnival last year due to lack of support, it is now the last remaining procession within at least the Somerset side of Exmoor National Park. And now it is extending the hand of friendship to would-be local carnivalites by launching a new category for 'other village' entries with a shield or cup for the winner. Organisers are busy posting details of the new class in the targeted towns and villages of Minehead, Cutcombe, Dulverton, Carhampton, Dunster, Williton and Watchet - which already supports Porlock Carnival. Porlock Carnival Committee chairman David Hancock said the village event had survived a foot and mouth outbreak, economic downturn, floods and difficult weather. "The carnival has always managed to happen, no matter what," he said. "With the loss of Dulverton Carnival we felt it would be a friendly gesture if other surrounding villages would like to join our happy band and make an entry on behalf of their own local village. "I think everyone would agree that it is important to keep these traditions alive if we possibly can - adults and children alike love the spectacle and fun of it and, more importantly, it helps with trade, tourism and the vibrancy of village life. "It brings us together, working towards a specific goal to help local charities and those in need of help." The 2014 Porlock Carnival will weave its way along the village's streets at 6pm on September 6.
