Police are reminding drivers to remove valuable items from their cars after a recent spate of thefts in the town centre and close to the Goldcroft area.

Police say patrols have been increased in the affected areas but need help from the public to make it harder for the thieves.

PC Brett Gitsham, of Yeovil crime reduction team, said: "Taking a few moments to remove any items from your car such as coats, mobile phones and radios can save you a lot of time and inconvenience if your vehicle is broken into."

"The majority of car stereos have removable security panels, by removing these you are potentially removing the temptation for a would be thief."

Fitting a car alarm or even simply parking your car in a garage or well-lit area may further reduce your chance of being targeted.

PC Gitsham added: "It is also worth taking the time to etch your property with your postcode and house number.

"Not only does this make property harder for the criminals to get rid of, but assists the police with identification should the item be recovered and also with the investigation process."

Power tools have also been targeted and police are advising people to either remove them from their vans or store them in a metal cage or box that is bolted to the floor and locked with a closed-shackle padlock.

Extra patrols have been placed in the areas but police are asking vehicle owners to take these basic steps to protect their cars.
