AVON and Somerset police have launched a month-long campaign aimed at drink and drug drivers.
Operation Tonic includes patrols that are both high visible and covert – and those caught driving over the limit could face a hefty fine of over £2,500, a driving ban or even a prison sentence.
During last year’s Operation Tonic, 146 people were arrested for drink and drug driving.
For many, the effect on their everyday life, beyond a drink driving fine or ban, would have included a loss of independence, job and financial stability.
Superintendent Andy Williams, Avon and Somerset Constabulary’s head of road safety, said: “Our approach to Operation Tonic promotes education over prosecution where possible and our ultimate aim is to reduce deaths, serious injuries and crime related to drink and drug driving.
“This year’s campaign highlights the serious consequences of getting caught by police whilst driving under the influence.”
He said that it was an individual’s choice to drink and drive but there were risks – even being ‘slightly over’ the limit will still land a driver with a penalty if caught.
Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said:“Driving under the influence of drink or drugs is not only a crime, it is socially and morally unacceptable and can have devastating consequences.
“I believe the majority of law-abiding people support the police in doing all we can to bring offenders to justice, keeping the roads safe not only this Christmas but all year round.”
Members of the public are asked to call 999 if they know about someone who is currently driving under the influence. In less urgent cases, and when the driver is not behind the wheel, text 07400 279101 with the word ‘drunk’ and details of the car, location and driver.
