MINEHEAD youngsters escaped from last week’s heatwave by going on a Polar expedition – in Alcombe.
Alcombe Methodist Church hosted a holiday club with a Polar exploration theme for 40 local children, organised by Exmoor youth project worker Lynne Barton and Methodist children and families worker Rebecca Edwards, with the help of volunteers from four churches in the town.
To bring the Polar Explorers theme to life, the church was decorated with sheets of artificial snow and a large igloo made from hundreds of plastic milk bottles.
Teams played games involving jumping over icebergs, throwing snowballs and a sleeping-bag relay, and watched films about Polar exploration and competed in challenges to get points.
Other activities included creating dens and team songs, and the week ended with a family lunch. The club was hailed as a huge success – and there are already plans to set next year’s event in outer space!
