THERE was little let-up in the weather with wind and rain sweeping across West Somerset and Exmoor on Tuesday (November 11) as communities fell silent at 11 am to remember all those who gave their lives for their country.

Having already endured heavy rain on Remembrance Sunday for the annual church services and processions, residents turned out again in towns and villages for the tribute given at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

There were poignant scenes in communities large and small with acts of Remembrance centred on war memorials built to remind today’s generation of the sacrifices made by those from yesteryear.

The Rev Philip Butcher led a two-minute silence at Minehead War Memorial, Bartlett Road, on Tuesday.

In Minehead, the two-minute silence was held at the war memorial on North Hill, in Martlett Road, led by the Rev Philip Butcher with the town’s mayor Cllr Craig Palmer and deputy mayor Cllr Anne Lawton.

A piper played ‘Amazing Grace’ and local schoolchildren were among those who laid wreaths.

The silence was observed and wreaths laid at war memorials in Watchet, Williton, Porlock, and Dunster, and a number of schools also held their own acts of Remembrance.

Danesfield School, in Williton, held a poignant service in collaboration with local Army Cadets, bringing together pupils, staff, and members of the community to honour those who had served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces.

The service provided a moment of reflection and gratitude, as pupils joined the cadets in paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of servicemen and women throughout history.

The event was marked by respectful silence, readings, and symbolic acts of Remembrance.

Headteacher Jo Smith said: “It is vital that our children understand the significance of Remembrance Day and the values it represents.

“Today’s service was a powerful reminder of the bravery and selflessness of those who have defended our country.”

Ms Smith said Danesfield remained committed to fostering a sense of respect, compassion, and historical awareness among its pupils.
