MINEHEAD'S shoppers' guide now has a sister publication - the West Somerset Eating Out Guide. The booklet has the backing of 40 restaurants, cafés, hotels and pubs from all over West Somerset, all of which boast a link with local food and drink suppliers. The first pocket guide of its kind to be published, it was the idea of Minehead and District Chamber of Commerce and Minehead Information Centre. "It is only meant as a guiding directory like the shoppers' guide," said chamber of commerce chairman Graham Sizer. "All the contact details and websites are listed and the map shows how easy it can be to get to even our most rural villages. "The illustrations by David Jessup also give out a warm and welcoming message." Mr Jessup has close links with the chamber and is a member of the Exmoor Producers' Association whose members already supply many of the eateries in the area with top quality food. As with the shoppers' guide, Mr Sizer said the distribution of up to 40,000 booklets will be kept low-cost and in-house. Copies will be sent to over 100 information centres, tourist attractors, caravan and camping sites over a twelve month period. Any profits will be put towards the running costs of Minehead's information centre. But the guide is not solely to help visitors to the area - local residents can also benefit and could even win a £100 eating-out voucher by picking up a copy. Chef Andrew Dixon of The Café Porlock Weir will put the names of anyone who pays more than £20 for a meal in any of the outlets featured in the guide in the next six months into a prize draw to win a slap-up meal. Full details are available in the new guide. Andrew will also be helping to launch a new food festival in February next year, with people being offered gastronomic experiences for just £10 for two courses at selected establishments cross the district. The £100 prize draw will take place during the February half term, when another popular chamber-sponsored event, the winter ice rink festival, takes place in Wellington Square. There are also plans to put copies of illustrations from both guides on display in one of Minehead's empty shop windows in the near future.
