YOUNGSTERS in Stogumber are a step closer to getting their own purpose-built play and sports facilities in the village.

Almost half an acre of redundant allotment was officially handed over to the Stogumber Playground Association earlier this month.

The plot of land at the edge of Slades Close is owned by Magna West Somerset Housing Association, which is leasing it to the National Playing Fields Association, which in turn is leasing it to the playground group.

The 'hand-over' was marked with a day-long programme of events at Stogumber Cricket Club, including speeches, presentations and displays.

The need for play and sports facilities in Stogumber was first highlighted in a report from the Children's Society.

Since then, lengthy consultations have taken place to ensure Magna was allowed to transfer the land and lease it at no charge to the National Playing Fields Association.

Pictured at the official handing-over ceremony are youngsters from the village with representatives of the Stogumber Playground Association and, seated in the centre, Martin Daly of Magna West Somerset Housing Association.
