VOLUNTEERS are being sought for a West Somerset beach clean next week as part of a project to clear a million miles of coastline each year.
The Plastic Free Exmoor event is being run with the Surfers Against Sewage ‘Million Mile Clean’ campaign, the largest initiative of its kind in the UK.
The volunteers will help to clear Greenaleigh Sand Beach, near Minehead, on Saturday, August 12, from 9.30 am to 1 pm.
They will meet in Minehead and walk the mile-and-a-half to the secluded beach to the west of the town, where the pebble ridge will be cleaned.
Plastic Free Exmoor community lead Peter Hoyland said: “Litter pickers and sacks will be provided but volunteers are advised to bring their own pair of gloves and to wear footwear suitable for walking and beach cleaning.”
The beach clean is also being supported by Exmoor National Park Authority.
Surfers Against Sewage started the ‘Million Mile Clean’ in 2021 with the aim of recruiting 100,000 volunteers to each clean 10 miles of blue, green, or city space annually.
It is being run every year until 2030 to mobilise a million volunteers to clean more than 10 million miles of UK landscape.
The annual action brings Ocean activists together to tackle plastic pollution head on, allowing them to ‘get together and feel the benefits of community spirit, being outdoors, and making a difference’.
