SIR — I am a founder member of the Brushford Action Group and wish to comment on your report 'Brushford residents form action group' (Free Press May 15) . Our group was formed in reaction to a proposed development which would fundamentally change the make-up of our village. It would go against our Parish Plan 2011 and also against West Somerset Council's own plan (2032). What Alex Bullock fails to mention is that the construction of the access will entail the removal of the ancient hedge which forms the boundary of Brushford and has done for hundreds of years. His plans show the hedge will be "translocated". I am advised that this is rarely successful. The hedge, which sits upon a substantial bank, contains at least six native species of trees. Even the ecology report from the developer said the hedge was home to dormice (a protected species). To rip out almost 100 metres of ancient hedgerow is not a sound ecological move. Not only would the plants in the hedgerow but the wildlife it sustains be gone forever. Ellersdown Lane dates back many hundreds of years; it was the main track into our 13 century church. The road network around our homes could also see a major increase in traffic - up to an extra 910 vehicle movements a week. Ellersdown Lane is only 6' 6" inches wide and could not sustain this dramatic increase in use. Our children currently walk safely to the play area along this lane; we would lose this normal part of village life. Mr Bullock says "much needed affordable housing would be provided". There are no affordable houses in his plan. Our village does not have a shop, there is no garage and our bus service has been decimated. The church and the parish hall form the hub of the village. In the past when this area was put forward for development, a government inspector's decision was to protect this area. Our infrastructure is constantly in decline. Your report suggested Clare Savill had a lead role in our group. I would like to point out she is only one of many concerned residents of Brushford. I urge all residents to help protect our village. Please take the time to look at the plan (Ref 3/04/15/004 ) on the West Somerset Council planning website and if you feel you would like to comment please do.
