WEST Somerset planners threw out the latest bid to build a supermarket in the centre of Williton yesterday (Thursday).
The controversial scheme put forward by local businessman David Gliddon was recommended for approval by West Somerset Council planning officers.
But members of the council’s planning committee voted 9-2 against granting planning permission for the scheme.
Around 90 villagers attended the committee’s meeting to hear the latest debate on the proposal, which Mr Gliddon had already seen rejected twice by the committee in his four-year battle to win backing.
On previous occasions, planning officers had recommended refusal of planning permission, but this time they advised committee members to give it the go ahead.
However, the committee voiced concerns over the effect the supermarket would have on the viability of the village centre as a whole and voted against approving it.
