SOME 30 people gathered outside the Readers Halt at Minehead Railway Station on Thursday – precisely 20 years since it was opened on March 8, 1998.

The second hand book and magazine emporium has been enlarged twice since it was opened by the Friends of Minehead Station.

Thursday’s gathering was also to celebrate all that has been achieved at the station over the past two decades.

The money raised has replaced fencing, restored the station chimneys, renovated the two canopies, resurfaced the very long platform and kept the station looking smart and welcoming.

Friends chairman Martyn Snell said: “Without the volunteers who open the ‘Halt’ every day that trains run, the people who generously let us have their pre-read books and magazines and other railway memorabilia and those who come and purchase what we have been given, none of this would have been possible.”

With a new season beginning, the fund raising continues and the Friends still hope people will donate items that can be recycled and sold to finance their continuing work. Stock will be reduced and need replenishing after the WSR Spring Steam Gala.
