Police dispersed late arrivals to Minehead North Hill rave but hundreds already thereWSR managing director Mark Smith said: "At the start of 1999, our commercial department set itself two targets - to carry 152,000 passengers including 500 organised travel group parties.
"As well as exceeding the overall total target, we also carried 558 organised parties.
"It is a tribute to all the volunteers and staff on the railway that we have been able to reach these targets whilst maintaining our reputations for friendliness and professionalism.
"This key aspect of our operation was reflected in our second place in the prestigious Heritage Railway of the Year awards.
"The increase in passengers has also been reflected in excellent business for the railway's retail and catering departments."
WSR ran trains over the New Year holiday but is now closed while repair and maintenance work is carried out to both track and engines.
Signalling work is underway at Bishops Lydeard to improve connections with the main line network and improvements are continuing at each of the ten stations along the 22-mile track.
The first major event of 2000 is the Spring Steam Gala which traditionally attracts visitors from all over Britain and even rom overseas.
Mr Smith said: "We have ended the 20th century with a high point. Now we have to look to build still further in the years ahead."
