A WEST Somerset man has been made an OBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours List. Peter Malim, aged 52, of Wick, near Stogursey, was given the accolade in recognition for his work for the Ministry of Defence (MoD). In particular, he was honoured for his role within the procurement department, specifically during military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr Malim has worked for the MoD for 33 years and is currently on a six month contract at the Hydrographic Office, in Taunton. He has lived in Wick with his wife Pat for 11 years and takes an active role in helping her manage the respected charity the Labrador Rescue Trust. The couple regularly foster dogs on behalf of the trust and organise fundraising events on behalf of the charity. "Although I get involved, it is mainly my wife who does the trust. She looks after the website and deals with inquiries," Mr Malim said. He said he was "very pleased" to receive an OBE and said the hardest thing had been trying to keep it a secret until the list was announced. Elsewhere on the honours list, renowned biographer Michael Holroyd, who has a holiday home in Porlock Weir, received a knighthood. Mr Holroyd, aged 71, is married to the novelist Margaret Drabble and received the honour for his services to literature. The couple divide their time between their home in London and West Somerset.
