YOUNG people across West Somerset will have an opportunity later this month to learn about high-paid career opportunities in the nuclear industry.

EDF, which is building Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, the UK’s first in a generation, will soon be recruiting for a number of apprenticeship roles which will start in September of next year.

The company will hold an apprenticeship information evening in its HPC Induction Centre, in Bridgwater, from 5.30 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, November 27.

Applications open on January 20 for the new apprenticeship roles, which include:

  • Business administration level three
  • Chemistry level six degree
  • Data analyst level four
  • Health and safety level three
  • Health Physics level two
  • Human Resources (HR) level three
  • Maintenance Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) level three
  • Nuclear Engineering (NEDA) level six degree

Anybody interested in any of the roles is being invited to book a place on the evening because spaces are limited.

They will have an opportunity to meet EDF early careers hiring managers and hear from some of the current Hinkley Point C apprentices about their day to day activities, and ask any questions they may have.

Hinkley C is Europe’s largest construction site and the first of the power station’s two reactors is scheduled to start generating electricity some time in 2029, with the second reactor coming on stream a year later.

Construction is running about six years behind schedule and well over more than twice its original £18 billion estimated cost.

The site will have about 15,000 people working there during its peak construction period, many of whom will have been recruited locally.

Once it has become fully operational, Hinkley C will generate clean, low-carbon energy for about six million UK homes during its 60-year lifespan.
