AROUND 100 children helped retrace the steps taken by wartime evacuees when they took part in a host of events to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two. The youngsters dressed as evacuees and gathered at Minehead Station where they met pensioners who themselves had been evacuated during the war. The two generations were then able to tuck into tea on the station, which was decorated with Union Jacks and packed with trestle tables to replicate a 1940s street party. Saturday's tea was part of a series of events organised by Stephen and Irene Clark under the banner The Songs That Won The War to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the war. Earlier, veterans, civic dignitaries and representatives from local organisations took part in a procession through the centre of Minehead accompanied by members from the Royal British Legion and led by Tiverton Town Band. Military vehicle enthusiasts added to the colour of the day with many donning World War Two uniforms to take part in a parade of Army vehicles through the town. Minehead seafront was turned into an outdoor stage as entertainers including the West Somerset Morris Men, Minehead Middle School Choir, the Devon and Somerset George Formby Society, Minehead Dance Club and the Songs That Won The War Singers provided a range of wartime entertainment. The entertainment will continue tonight (Friday) with a cabaret evening in Minehead's Queen's Hall with nationally acclaimed Vera Lynn soundalike Jill Daniels and a George Formby tribute. The commemorations will then culminate with a grand outdoor concert and picnic at Minehead Rugby Club. The family event will feature games, stalls and entertainers including The Turner Tappers, Minehead Dance Club, the Songs That Won The War Singers and Oasis Drama. The highlight will be performances by "Vera Lynn" and "George Formby". Concert-goers are being encouraged to take along a picnic to give the evening a party atmosphere. The main programme will start at 8pm. More information is available from Mr and Mrs Clark on 01643 822035 or via the website http://www.welovesomerset.com">www.welovesomerset.com
